STARLINK SIGNALS AND IP

Starlink Signals and IP

Description

I’ve come across with this Article (https://lnkd.in/dkCP8bnt) with a banner comment “Property rights do not extend to something so intangible as electronic signals, and that includes intellectual property ownership—[and] they shouldn’t. But the Starlink story illustrates what happens when property ownership is inert.”

According to the author of this Article electronic signals are intangible. Can someone come up with a counter-claim saying that they are actually tangible and detectable? Or as the author of this Article claims, shouldn’t or aren’t there any intellectual property ownership over electronic signals? If yes, the dissertation of the author is right but if no, then what would be the core IPR surrounding Starlink’s electronic signal? Author claims that it is not eligible to patent protection or copyright protection. I think this is also debatable.
